Beyond Strategy

Building blocks

Develop and execute successful strategies

Beyond StrategyNearly 70% of corporate strategies are either not implemented or they don’t work. This is because “strategy” is still done quite badly in most companies. This presentation and workshop highlights the three key disciplines required to ensure a strategy is correctly formulated and implemented, ensuring participants understand the notion of “adaptive strategies” for an ever changing world. We are particularly passionate about helping our clients build strategic responsiveness at every level of their organisations.

Using the “strategic drive chain” developed by Pete Laburn, we bring together the three different disciplines typically associated with strategy development:

  1. Strategic Analysis/Development, championed by Michael Porter, is where it starts: understanding the competitive landscape and your potential competitive advantage. Learn the keys to successful analysis of the situation you face.
  2. Strategic Planning, which involves working out the details of how to get where we want to go. The only strategy you will implement is the strategy you’re capable of implementing, so it is vital to consider leadership, stakeholders, capabilities and operations.
  3. Often the missing element of a strategy session, Strategic Intuition is where the creative idea for what to do actually comes from. Instead of waiting for a flash of inspiration or hoping for the best with a creative think tank, use Strategic Intuition to predictably produce results that have the potential to revitalise and reinvent your business. This exciting new approach to developing strategic ideas is being pioneered by William Duggan of Columbia Business School.

TomorrowToday has assisted some of the world’s leading companies to ensure strategy is understood at all levels, and that companies develop and implement the creative ideas that will ensure their future success. Our team are preferred faculty on “Strategic Thinking” at various business schools, including the Gordon Institute of Business Science, Africa’s leading business school.

Formats

Typically, the session is best delivered as a workshop, over a full day or a day and half. Using appreciative enquiry and ParticiPlan processes, we take your team through a dynamic workshop. We show you the context in which you will be operating in the next 3-5 years, and help you develop a workable strategy to respond and take charge in your industry.

This session can also be delivered as a keynote presentation or strategic input at a strategy away day. This would be useful if you want your team to create a shared vocabulary for strategy development.

Take Home Value

By the end of the session, participants will understand the strategy development process, and be equipped to generate and deliver on strategies. They will have an understanding of their personal role in the strategy process, and be inspired to be involved both the formulation and implementation of their organisation’s strategies. They will have some understanding of change management issues.

This programme needs to be customised for your team, your desired outcomes and the context in which you find yourself. Please contact us for more details.

Recent clients have said the following about this specific programme:

“Graeme brings to his sessions not only pertinent understanding of strategy, economies and generational differences, but also challenges members of his audience to bring about essential change in their approach to individuals and markets. I’ve seen this inspire leaders to create sustainable, profitable and ethical futures for their organisations. His professional approach and clear expertise brings immediate rapport with his audiences. This, coupled with the obvious backing of research for the content he presents, makes his presentations immediately worthwhile. The greatest impact of his sessions in my mind however is how he enables people to make the necessary decisions that lead to sustainable growth, at both an organisational and individual level.”
Dr Charlene Lew, CSP: Senior Programme Manager, Gordon Institute of Business Science

“On behalf of the team I really wanted to say THANK YOU to Dean for such a great start to our strategy session. The feedback about your section was overwhelmingly positive and I think you provided the team with real insight into the context we are operating in and the challenges we might face. I thought your style hit exactly the right balance of informality and humour whilst making sure the messages were clear. Thanks again and hope to work with you again soon.”
Claire Osborn, Head of Talent Management, Novartis Pharmaceuticals UK Limited

“I write to thank you warmly for your outstanding presentation to our National Board, followed by the valued workshop with our Executive Committee. The benefits are being seen in increased understandings, using a common language and preparing to ‘raise the game’ in strategic thinking. Your collaborative preparation became evidenced in the way in which you used our own internal vocabulary and examples to illustrate more generic conceptual frameworks. Our teams appreciated the tone and engaging style of the presentations, and then the rigour of the workshop challenges. This work has ensured an excellent preparation for our UK-wide strategic development.”
Derek Twine CBE, Chief Executive, The Scout Association UK

“Graeme facilitated a day long strategy development session with the Academy for Chief Executives. I was impressed with his approach before the event as he worked hard to understand both our context and our specific outcomes, and then custom-designed a process that would work for us. On the day, his facilitation style allowed everyone to contribute, but ensured that no-one dominated proceedings, and he led us masterfully through some difficult issues to an excellent outcome for our meeting. Graeme has an excellent ability to manage a meeting, guide discussions without imposing himself, and ensure that you reach your desired outcomes. I highly recommend him as a facilitator for strategy development sessions.”
Simon Lester, Executive Chairman, Academy for Chief Executives
