Mind the Gap, with Sue Grant-Marshall, Penguin, 2004

Understanding the different generations

“Mind the Gap” is for you if you want to know why: Your 18-year-old son isn’t interested in being a doctor – he wants to save the whale; your grandfather gives you Big Band CDs for your birthday; your secretary knows more than you do; your grandson calls you Peter instead of granddad. In short, this title aims to promote understanding between the generations. This is vitally important in all of our relationships, especially in the workplace. Application chapters focus attention on: work, marketing and advertising, leadership, teamwork, finances, parenting, education and training, “retyrement”, travel, politics, faith, health, and home. Still a best selling book, with five star reviews!

Future-Proof Your Child: Parenting the wired generation, with Nikki Bush, Penguin, Oct 2008

Understand why the world has changed, and how to respond as a parent of young children

‘Stop the world, I want to get off!’ is the regular refrain of many of today’s time-pressured parents. ‘Give me an experience and I’ll promise you a relationship,’ is the mantra of their children. The world has changed. The future has changed. Childhood is changing. Raising children has never been more challenging – or potentially rewarding. It is increasingly obvious that the world into which our young children will enter as adults, somewhere between 2020 and 2030, will be nothing like the world their parents grew up in, or even the world we currently inhabit. We need a better understanding of the world of the future in order to prepare our children and to ‘future-proof’ them. Future-proof your Child is a very different kind of parenting book. While it contains many useful practical hints and tips, it also focuses on the context for parenting and child development today. It convinces 21st-century parents of the need to change their approach to parenting future generations. This title will help you to create a framework for your parenting experience as you embark on the highly personal adventure of raising children who will thrive in the future. It is relevant, accessible, practical and inspirational. It will take you back in time and forward into the future to help you make the best choices for your children now! Future-proof your Child highlights the critical importance of making choices, having conversations, and consciously connecting with tomorrow’s children today.

Mind Over Money, with Louis Fourie and Sue Grant Marshall, Penguin, 2001

How different generations approach personal financial management

“Mind Over Money” is not so much about your money as it is about your mind. It’s about your attitude and approach to money. It’s not hard to make money if you are careful and sussed – millionaires are two a penny today. But, keeping it is the problem. That’s what smart people do. It’s what you need to do. Playwright Tennessee Williams said, ” You can be young without money but you can’t be old without it.” Bear this in mind – today’s 30 and 40 year olds will live to be 100 years old. Teenagers will crack 120 years easily. That’s a long time to live in “retirement”. Will your money last? This title is about how to live from womb to tomb in such a way that you can live – and die – in comfort. Along the way the authors show you how to grow up happy; choose the right careers (forget what your parents and teachers say); understand why Baby Boomers can’t stop shopping and why the Silent generation saves like mad and always pays cash for everything. You’ll appreciate your teenager, your father, your wife, your grandchild’s attitudes to money – at last. Best of all – you’ll understand yourself!

Mind the Gap

  • M. Cross (Wiltshire, England)

I attended a presentation on the content of this book given by one of the co-authors and wanted to learn more. I was not disappointed when I read the book. a sufficient level of generational theory is described to underpin the many practical insights delivered in every chapter. Its fun to read and there were many instances where my own experiences resonated with what was written.

Overall, a good read, several practical insights to personally act on and value for money.

  • 5 stars! Dripping With Content, June 30, 2008, by Donald L. Coldwell Jr.

I great read/text for learning the basic tenets of generational studies. Many will say that this is a waste of time, others will say that it is the future of communication. This book however, cuts through all of that and just lays out the history of generations and goes on to describe (in detail) the main characteristics of each generation.

This book would be great for a text book or reference book as well for anyone who interacts with a wide range of generations and people groups.

You will never look at your boss/coworker/staff the same again.

  • 5 stars! ***A MANDATORY MUST READ FOR EVERYONE ***, May 9, 2008, by J. Gregory Souders

I have been both a Pastor and a Critical Care Paramedic for 25+ years. This book by Graeme Codrington should be a MUST READ by anyone and everyone who is a Parent, in a Leadership role or position, Boss, Pastor, or anyone who deals with people on a daily basis.

Graeme presents in this book a very well researched, documented, entertaining, and easy to understand read about the DIFFERENCES that make up the ‘generations’ (E.g. The Silencers, GIers, Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, etc.)

Reading this book will not only help you understand ‘HOW’ we differ, but also ‘WHY’. And in doing so, it will not only give you new insights to the uniqueness of our differences, it will also help you appreciate who you are. And, IF APPLIED, it could enhance interpersonal relationship, improve any business and church or organization, etc. in knowing how to effectively reach, lead, manage, impact, and appreciated those who THINK and ACT “different” than we do – To ‘know’ the people we are trying to reach. This book will help you to finally realize that it’s NOT that ‘they are wrong’ and ‘we are right’. But it IS how we DIFFER and are UNIQUE – and in doing so, how best to understand and interact with each other.

Needless to say, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. In fact, on a scale from 1 to 10 with ’10′ being the ‘highest’ rating I could possibly give it, I could easily give it a 10,000,000. Yes, it REALLY IS that good.

This book should be REQUIRED READING for EVERYONE. Especially those that lead others (as well as read by every parent). It might just help you, (or you in helping others) get you out of their ‘boxed-in, closed-minded, superior-than-thou thinking, or making the statements of “In MY day, this is the way we did it”, or “We ain’t never done it that way before”, etc.

In this book you will find the REASON for our differences and NOT that “our way” is right and “their way” is wrong, just DIFFERENT.

I DO know what this book CAN do. This book can RADICALLY CHANGE not only YOUR LIFE, but the LIFE OF YOUR ORGANIZATION. And I don’t give this kind of recommendation lightly. Every person, organization, and group that I have recommended this book to, so far, has come back to me and stated that this book was probably one of THE BEST BOOKS they ever read that has helped their organization, church, company, etc., as well as themselves and relationship-wise regarding themselves as a parent and child.

It COULD perhaps make the difference in your organization, IF your ‘boss’ would read this book to help him or her understand ‘why’ they can’t keep trying to operate a business on principles from 20+ years ago (E.g. They are determine to make that square peg fit in that round hole like it used to – but won’t anymore nor ever will again). Leaders who can read this book and embrace it’s message may very well maintain their position of leadership, but actually turn their organization back around.

So here is my bottom-line, no frills, recommendation as a Pastor, Paramedic, Parent, and Leader: GET THIS BOOK TODAY!!! READ IT. DEVOUR IT, APPLY IT, and then TELL SOMEONE ELSE ABOUT IT. Once you start reading it, you won’t want to put it down.

Trust me, you will be more than glad you did!!!
